Mermaid Parade 2013

Ever wanted to have the experience of living like a mystical magical mermaid on land?!  Well, Coney Island's Mermaid Parade was last weekend and guess who made the trip all the way out.  I braved the sea of pretzel-munchers and beer-guzzlers to the boardwalk of dreams and partook in a celebration like no other!  The festivities were merry and the mermaids were out in full force.

How humorous.  I bumped into another Mermaid who happened to be wearing the same outfit.

The energy of the crowd was beautifully positive and welcoming!  Since moving to NYC three years ago, I had heard and seen photographs of the parade and it always seemed like a wonderful day of merriment, but I always missed it and never made the 45+ minute trek from (gasp!) Manhattan.  Needless to say, when I found out one day beforehand that the parade was taking place again, I was hopeful that I'd make it.  It really turned out to be an M Smo Experience and a day of beauty and sunshine and bliss.  My first time on the boardwalk of Coney Island was memorable:  the weather was far chillier than I expected on the beach (ahem, when you're half-naked as a mermaid)...there was far more real, fatty fried food than I'd seen in a while ...and the general crowd was an odd mixture of locals, carnival attendees, and parade-goers.

Gorgeous day.  It's fun to be a Mermaid, but I prefer to be a Lady.
